Power Quality Analysis

Measurement and diagnosis of electrical disturbances

Understanding and correcting power quality issues

Electrical disturbances—such as voltage dips, harmonics, surges, or transients—can seriously affect equipment performance, cause production downtime, and lead to costly breakdowns.

At 3E Eng., we offer a specialized service for measuring and diagnosing electrical disturbances in order to accurately identify the sources of problems and propose appropriate solutions.

Why analyze electrical disturbances?

Industrial, commercial, and institutional businesses depend on a stable power supply. A poor-quality network can cause:

  • repeated malfunctions of sensitive equipment (automated systems, starters, protection systems);
  • premature wear and tear on motors and transformers;
  • service interruptions with financial impacts;
  • non-compliance with standards such as IEEE 519 or Hydro-Québec guidelines.

Our services enable you to detect and understand the source of disturbances, whether on your internal network or on the Hydro-Québec network, and to implement effective corrective measures.

Our methodology

We deploy our Hioki PQ3198 power quality analyzers directly at the electrical input or on specific circuits. These devices measure continuously for several days or weeks:

  • Steady-state voltages and currents: imbalances, harmonic distortion (THD), compliance with current standards.
  • Transient events: dips and surges, frequency drops, rapid phenomena related to motor starts or network faults.
  • Harmonics and flicker: analysis of the impact of non-linear loads on wave quality.

Measurements are performed in accordance with the IEC 61000-4-30 measurement protocol. The results are then interpreted by our engineers in order to make an accurate diagnosis.

Recommendations and solutions

At the end of the study, we provide a clear and detailed report including:

  • documented findings with graphs and recordings;
  • identification of probable causes (e.g., power surges, improper connections, lack of surge protectors);
  • concrete corrective measures, such as adding protective devices, optimizing grounding, installing start-up sequencers, or coordinating with Hydro-Québec to limit disruptive events.

We can also recommend the installation of permanent analyzers to ensure continuous monitoring of power quality.

Your benefits

We have supported several industrial, commercial, and maritime clients in the Quebec City, Montreal, Mauricie, Chaudière-Appalaches, Centre-du-Québec, Côte-Nord, and Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean regions:

  • Increased reliability of your electrical installations.
  • Reduction in unplanned downtime and breakdown-related costs.
  • Regulatory compliance with IEC, IEEE, and Hydro-Québec standards.
  • Enhanced safety for your equipment and teams.
