Measurements and testing of ship electrical systems

Measurements and tests

Naval expertise for reliability and safety

Modern ships rely on increasingly complex electrical systems to power their propulsion, auxiliary equipment, and passenger safety. To ensure reliable operation that complies with the requirements of classification societies (Bureau Veritas, Lloyd’s, Transport Canada), it is essential to perform regular electrical measurements and tests.

At 3E Eng., we assist shipowners, shipyards, and public agencies in assessing the condition of marine electrical installations. Our services cover ferries, icebreakers, research vessels, navy ships, and Coast Guard vessels.

Our measurement and diagnostic services

Insulation and continuity tests

We perform insulation resistance measurements to identify the risk of ground faults and prevent unplanned downtime. These tests verify the integrity of generators, azimuth thrusters, transformers, and auxiliary circuits.

Wave quality and harmonic analysis

Using high-precision power analyzers (Hioki PQ3198 power analyzer), we measure total harmonic distortion (THD), voltage imbalances, and transients. These analyses detect sources of interference related to variable speed drives or non-linear loads and ensure compliance with Bureau Veritas and IEC standards.

Cable transit and watertightness checks

We carry out cable transit inspections to check for watertightness and safety. These checks are crucial to prevent water ingress that could compromise system reliability and crew safety.

Thermographic inspections

Using specialized infrared cameras, we perform thermographic inspections to detect hot spots, connection faults, and overloads that are invisible to the naked eye. This preventive technique allows us to quickly locate anomalies before they cause breakdowns or fires, helping to extend the life of electrical equipment.

Energy measurement campaigns

We conduct comprehensive energy assessments to evaluate the consumption of main engines, generators, and auxiliary engines. These measurements form the basis for identifying energy efficiency opportunities, reducing operating costs, and limiting the carbon footprint of ships.

Examples of completed projects

  • NM Peter Fraser (STQ): campaign to isolate propulsion circuits, ventilation, windlasses, and auxiliary heaters.
  • NM Félix-Antoine-Savard (STQ): comprehensive analysis of electrical wave quality and energy balance, including monitoring of generator and engine consumption.
  • NM Joseph-Savard (STQ): harmonic study in connection with Bureau Veritas certification, demonstrating compliance with harmonic distortion levels
  • CCGS Amundsen (Canadian Coast Guard): inspection of cable transit watertightness to ensure the safety and reliability of electrical networks in marine environments.
