Study and adjustment of electrical protection coordination

Coordination of electrical protection devices

Optimize the security and reliability of your networks

The coordination of electrical protection is an essential step in ensuring worker safety, equipment protection, and continuity of service for facilities. This study consists of verifying that, in the event of a fault, it is always the protection device closest to the affected area that intervenes, thus avoiding false trips and widespread shutdowns.

At 3E Eng., we carry out protection coordination studies in accordance with CSA, NFPA, and IEEE standards, tailored to the requirements of industrial, commercial, and institutional customers.

Why conduct a protection coordination study?

Proper coordination makes it possible to:

  • Reduce the risk of electrical incidents by limiting the energy released during a short circuit;
  • Minimize production downtime through optimal selectivity between circuit breakers and fuses;
  • Improve operator safety by reducing the incident energy during an electric arc;
  • Ensure regulatory compliance with current standards and Hydro-Québec requirements (see section 1.2.1.4 of the Blue Book);
  • Extend equipment life by avoiding repetitive or untimely tripping.

Our methodology

Our engineers conduct a detailed analysis of your electrical installations using specialized software such as EasyPower.

The study includes:

  1. Data collection: on-site survey of protective devices (circuit breakers, fuses, relays) and single-line diagrams.
  2. Network modeling: simulation of your electrical system at nominal voltages (600 V, 4.16 kV, 25 kV, etc.).
  3. Superimposition of protection curves: analysis of time/current curves to verify selectivity between equipment.
  4. Adjustment of settings: optimization of trip parameters (LT, ST, Inst, I²t) to ensure a reliable protection sequence.
  5. Detailed report: clear presentation of results with diagrams, recommendations, and technical appendices.
  6. Link to the Arc Flash study: reduction of incident energy levels through optimized coordination.

Examples of achievements

We have assisted several industrial, commercial, and maritime clients in the Quebec City, Montreal, Chaudière-Appalaches, Gaspésie, Centre-du-Québec, and Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean regions:

  • Sawmill: adjustment of protections to coordinate the main circuit breaker with motor fuses, ensuring continuity of operation while reducing the risk of arc flash.
  • Industrial client: coordination between the client’s 25 kV fuses and Hydro-Québec’s 4.16 kV protection, with replacement recommendations to ensure compliance
  • Municipal building: validation of coordination between PP1, PS1, and PS2 panels, with adjustment of instantaneous settings to prevent false trips
